Position: The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law is seeking two attorneys, one with at least 1 year of post-law school experience and one with at least 4 years of experience, to work in the Brennan Center's Democracy Program. The Program seeks to bring the ideal of representative self-government closer to reality, by eliminating barriers to full and equal political participation and by striving to ensure that public policy and institutions reflect the diverse voices and interests that make for a rich and energetic democracy. Initially the positions will focus on campaign finance reform at the federal, state, and local level, including managing current constitutional litigation defending state and federal campaign finance reforms. Ideally, the positions will commence in July 2010 or very soon afterward.

Qualifications: The ideal candidates will have a J.D., up to eight years of legal experience (including clerkships, if any), and a strong entrepreneurial spirit. Excellent legal research, analysis, strategy, and writing skills; initiative, imagination, and versatility; organizational skills; the ability to deal with diverse clients and to coordinate work effectively with other organizations will be required. Significant litigation experience and demonstrated commitment to public interest law are real pluses.

The Justice Program seeks an attorney for its Access to Justice Project to run the Community Oriented Defender Network, partnering with defenders across the country to achieve racial justice policy reforms and to help break the cycle of poverty, arrest and incarceration. The attorney will also work on additional reform initiatives to improve the civil justice system and the criminal justice system. Activities may include guiding policy campaigns, authoring reports, lobbying, litigating and convening conferences. Although the position is located in New York, the Center would consider locating the position in its Washington, D.C. office.

Fall 2010 Legal Internship

Position: Each semester, the Brennan Center hosts 4-6 legal interns to work on cutting edge legal issues, including national security issues raised by the Patriot Act, expanding voter registration, strengthening campaign finance laws, and improving access to the courts. Our research, policy development and advocacy focus on systemic reform that would combat lasting legacies of discrimination and inequality. Interns will assist attorneys with litigation, scholarship, public education, legislative counseling, and advocacy, with an emphasis on legal research and writing.

Students are not compensated by the Brennan Center for their internships. They do receive one-on-one supervision of their legal work by lawyers on our staff. If students need to complete a particular type of writing assignment for their coursework requirements, we can and have accommodated such requests by allowing students to write law review style articles about legal questions that arise in our work.

Qualifications: Excellent legal research, analysis, and writing skills; initiative, imagination, and versatility; and a passion for our issues.

The Brennan Center for Justice at NYU School of Law seeks a Manager of Major Gifts to sustain current major donor giving and help build a comprehensive major donor program. The Center currently has a $7 million budget and a portfolio of $1.6 million in major gifts. The position reports to the Director of Development and works closely with the Executive Director and Trustees to maintain current funding and develop new sources of major gifts.

Responsibilities

Manage the Center's portfolio of major donors and prospects, including Board members; maintain an annual major donor workplan, including tracking and monitoring prospects and donors through all phases: identification, cultivation, solicitation, stewardship and renewal.
Identify new major donor prospects and assist in creating strategies for approaching and cultivating them.
Prepare strategy and briefing documents for meetings with major donors, cultivation events for individuals, and manage follow-up activities.
Provide the Executive Director, Board members, Program staff, and the Director of Development with all relevant information about Center donors with whom they maintain relationships, keeping them up to date on donor activities in and outside of the Center.
Collect, document and disseminate, as needed, information from Center leadership and staff on individual donor relations activities.
When appropriate, act as liaison between donors/donor representatives and program and leadership staff or Board members.
Develop a thorough understanding of Brennan Center programs and gather and disseminate up to date information on programmatic activity for donor correspondence including letters, proposals, reports, updates, emails and mailings.
Manage cultivation and stewardship activities, including potential webinar or phone briefings on Brennan Center issues for donors.
Oversee production and execution of mass donor mailings.
Participate in regular financial progress meetings with Center leadership and, with the Director of Development, prepare revenue projections for individuals for annual budgeting.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will have:

3-5 years experience in managing a major donor giving or comparable fundraising program;
Demonstrated ability to craft clear and compelling cases for support, taking complex goals, strategies and legal concepts and framing them for the individual donor;
Superb writing and oral presentation skills;
Experience and expertise in developing relationships with donors and crafting major donor strategies;
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail;
Proficiency with budgets, financial reporting and revenue forecasting;
Excellent diplomacy and teambuilding skills required to work well with colleagues at all levels and to assist in supervising junior staff;
Openness to evolving responsibilities;
Passion for social justice and the mission and goals of the Brennan Center; and
Experience in fundraising with progressive and advocacy donors a plus.
